Are you ready to make your next career move?

How do you know when it’s time to make a move in your career? The number of year’s you’ve been with a company isn’t necessarily a good indicator. There’s a lot of factors to consider and the answer won’t be the same for everyone. So what are the things you should be considering?

1. Your prospects for promotion and advancement are low

If you’ve been in the same role for more than 3 years and you and your manager aren’t talking about a promotion in the near future, this is a sign it’s time to move on. You’re basically making their life easy and it’s not in their interests to move you up the ladder because (a) they have to find someone else to do your job or (b) the business has not grown and cannot support the promotion.

3. You’re not enjoying your work

Basically, you’re bored. You’re not being stretched or given anything new or interesting to do. It makes for a really long day at work. This is a sign you’ve outgrown your role and possibly the company your working for. You need to be looking for a new challenge.

3. You don’t like where the company is heading

The values and purpose of the business are no longer aligned with your own. Maybe there’s a new CEO or you’ve just been through a merger and things aren’t like they use to be. Or maybe you’ve just evolved and grown as a person and it’s no longer a good fit for you. Whatever the reason for the shift, you’re not feeling the same passion and energy you once were and it’s impacting your feelings towards your work. If this is the case it’s time to reconsider your career options.

4. You are ready for change

This is the most important factor. You need to be in the right frame of mind to move. Standing still and staying in the same job is easy, but it’s unlikely to lead you to a fulfulling career. Change requires a shift in your mindset. Ask yourself, “are you committed to making change?”  Think of the potential benefits of making a move in your career – a better title at work, maybe more money, feeling happier and healthier or making a greater difference to someone elses life. If you want these things, you need to start making changes. To quote Tony Robbins “By changing nothing, nothing changes.”

Move past your fear, it’s up to you.
